The African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND) is a scientific, peer-reviewed, online journal published in Kenya since 2001. The journal was first launched as the African Journal of Food and Nutritional Sciences (AJFNS) under the Rural Outreach Program by Prof. Ruth Oniang’o as the editor-in-chief. The name change to AJFAND came about as more research linked nutrition to agriculture, environment and human development in Africa.


AJFAND’s goals are to provide a platform through which food and nutrition issues and information concerning Africa and its unique attributes, can be effectively addressed and disseminated, to provide a capacity-building facility in scholarly publishing for budding African scholars, and to bring to the global audience research from the global south.

Open Access

AJFAND is open access and is indexed in major databases like Scopus, AGORA, Food Science and Technology Abstracts, AJOL, DOAJ, CABI, EBSCO, among others. More information about AJFAND indexing and partnerships can be found on the website.

The journal has an editorial board and a roster of over 200 qualified, widely read, and widely published international reviewers. Besides academic research, the journal provides an avenue for sharing information on national, regional, and international-level food and nutrition programs, commentaries, short communications, book reviews, and relevant news and events.

AJFAND Publishing Program

Our internationally recognized publishing program covers a wide range of scientific and development disciplines, including agriculture, food, nutrition, environmental management and sustainable development related information.

Main objectives are:

  • To provide a broad base of knowledge
  • To increase the capacity of decision making – for policy makers, NGOs, farmers, to formulate informed decisions.
  • To increase the influence of readers in the generation of content
  • To give coherence and wider relevance to often fragmented, inaccessible and regionally specific information on agricultural technologies being generated by local scientists, policy-makers and agriculturalists
  • To Contribute to public awareness and understanding of all technologies


The journal initially aimed at releasing two issues per year.indeed it did and each year issue carried about 10 research articles and one or two students articles. The student articles aimed at encouraging and introducing university students to the culture of publishing.

It grew into a quarterly publication with each issue combining research, programs and policy aspect.

this year for the past 7 months it has been able to produce an issue of 10 – 12 per month.
